Wu Xiaodong is a highly savvy student in the second graduate calligraphy class of Peking University.
Look at his writing, the spirit through the thin hard vigorous touches and fine
strokes. He often love with extremely brief writing, the essence of aesthetic
freehand line to grasp the object of the world, different changes with lines of
ups and downs, thick and straight, wet and dry, soft and smooth to convey the
spirit of the calligrapher’s personality bosom.
Xiao Dong and I went to Korea to participate in the international
exhibition of calligraphy, his calm and consider the overall situation has left
me a deep impression. He can copying diligently, learn the spirit of
traditional culture from the classic, macro fine traditional classic book, he
has a profound cultural identity on a "cultural
calligraphy". In my opinion, the contemporary calligraphy circles has
entered the period of Warring States of the calligraphy, and one of the most
important direction is pulled away by the west, that is the extreme influence
of western culture, and behind it is a Chinese calligraphy national nihilism. Therefore, Wang Xizhi in "case view", the handwritten culture has been
declining, it is waching like modern western large paintings, or pay
attention to the manic visual impact as less words of Japanese inks school.
I pay much attention to the future development direction of Chinese
calligraphy. I think if these phenomena sit aside, it is likely that the cultural character of Chinese
calligraphy is gradually disappearing, and the rest is trivial and human schema. Therefore, respecting the value choice of every calligrapher,
we must emphasize "keeping to the right innovation", that is,
respecting tradition and respecting classics, and entering the Wei and Jin
Dynasties and taking the right way of calligraphy. Xiaodong approached the
classics and rediscovered the spirit of Oriental Culture in the good cultural
and artistic atmosphere in Peking University, and felt the "great climate" in the era of the rise of new
powers in the new century.
I often see that some works are very artificial, human traces are too
heavy, and there are few natural worlds. I love what kind of talent, full of
natural climate hovering works, reflects a kind of
"large calligraphy", "large realm", “great climate” . Even
the letters, hand scroll, long scroll and small Doufang embodies a kind of great
climate, making people feel the visual impact of the big aesthetics. This
"big", on the one hand is the inheritance of the traditional Chinese culture:
authentic, origin, basic; two is the strength of innovation, the innovation can
be said to be on the basis of previous added a single brick and tile, the
opposite has great climate calligraphy works can be seen in the "three Wang"
(Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Wang Duo), the Tang Dynasty Sun Guoting, Zhang Xu,
Huai Su, Qing Dynasty Fu Shan, modern times Yu Youren, some of the modern
stroke structure and spiritual elements, and in addition take all masters
stokes.
I am pleased to see that as the strength to send calligrapher, the process
of Xiongdong learning calligraphy reflects the process of the way technology. He
absorbed in classic copybooks and get rid of bad habits, improve writing
habits, absorbing factor and has been consistent, cultivate a good comfortable
feeling of writing. This and those who deviate from
the tradition of self consolidating the wrong calligraphers in stark contrast. These young calligraphers have greatly
enhanced the height and thickness of cultural
calligraphy through two years' Calligraphy Education in Peking University. They
finally began to explore and answer the questions of contemporary Chinese
calligraphy and international calligraphy.
Meditation is to read and write, is scholars and calligrapher's part, and
is able to survive life, the other is as trassient as a
fleeting cloud. Xiaodong is still young, one year old but different state,
the calligraphy from different environment. His daily practise, the future will
be brilliant! Life is too short to sigh, ought to be feeling times. It is
really a blessing to carry out a picture of life in the art of calligraphy. So,
we should be thankful for calligraphy!
